About us

Our Society's objectives are to bridge the gap between academia and the life science industry, offer applied life science students a networking platform and organise talks of pharmacological and scientific interest.

Through our events, we aim at inspiring students to consider different career paths and allow them to build long-lasting friendships and collaborations with people that share similar goals and perspectives.

President

Caroline Weglinski is a DPhil student in the Department of Pharmacology, where she is studying the role of lysosomes in structural plasticity in a model of Alzheimer's Disease. She completed her BSc in Pharmacology at McGill University before coming to Oxford to study for an MSc in Pharmacology, where she completed a project attempting to rescue the synaptic transmission deficits in an Alzheimer's model by manipulation of a specific calcium channel. As President, she wants to help the society to organise talks in order to encourage Oxford students towards a career in STEM disciplines.

Vice President

Sofia Savastano is a third year Undergraduate student in Biochemistry (Molecular and Cellular). She is currently working with Evotec, Abingdon, expressing and purifying novel drug targets within their pipeline. As Vice President, she aims to get the undergraduate body more involved in the Society and collaborate with the committee to organise events.

Secretary

Catherine Choi is a first-year DPhil student in the Department of Pharmacology. She is in the Tammaro lab studying cardiovascular pharmacology in the TMEM16A Ca2+-activated Cl- channel. She completed MSci Integrated Pharmacology and Physiology at King’s College London and had a year of industrial placement in Japan before coming to Oxford. She is excited to join the Pharmacology Society as Secretary and work with the committee members to organise academic, industrial and social events.

Social Officer

Angie Wong is a second year chemist at Pembroke college, studying chemistry. She is passionate about the healthcare space, and aspires to pursue a fourth year medicinal chemistry project. She grew up in Guangzhou, China in an international school. In her free time, Angie enjoys rowing, reading and drawing. As social/sponsorship officer, Angie hopes to help promote awareness of the life science industry in Oxford, and make some like minded friends

Treasurer

Hana Bashir is a second year Biological Sciences Student at Pembroke College. She is really looking forward to being treasurer of the Oxford Pharmacological Society so that she can play a role in securing some more excellent events and speakers. In her free time she does gymnastics, netball and surfing. Her current favourite area of pharmacology is CAR T-Cell Therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) which is a novel cancer immunotherapy! In particular she is interested in the role of CAR T-cell therapy to treat solid tumours such that the CAR T-cell is able to penetrate the extracellular matrix. She hopes to see evweryone at future events!

Temea Turjaka is a third year Undergraduate student studying Biochemistry (Molecular and Cellular). She will be doing her fourth-year master's project on isolation and characterisation of rodent monoclonal antibodies against pre-clinical vaccine candidates for malaria. She has worked in the Nuffield Department of Medicine, researching HIV-1 and HIV-2 pathogenesis. This summer, she will be doing an internship at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, working in Medical Affairs. She is interested in pursuing a career in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. As Sponsorship Officer, she aims to expand our sponsorships and organise sponsorship-based networking events so we can continue organising these incredible talks and events.
